Meaningful Music

 The power of songs

Music has always been one of the biggest parts of my life. No matter where I walk to or travel to, I have my headphones with me. Therefore, I want to capture some songs in this blog post, which I particularly connect to my Danish experience. There are, in fact, a lot of them, but I tried to collect the most powerful ones.

Call it a mixtape

Marilyn Manson - The Nobodies

Before I came to Denmark, I listened to his best of album all the time while driving my grandmother's car. It just reminds me of that feeling of freedom and excitement before coming here.

Volbeat - Lola Montez

This is a special one. We heard it on my Goodbye Party and my childhood friend, Jenny, brought me a flower to put in my hair. "You look just like Lola Montez in the music video!", she said. It was a feeling, I guess. (And I later on learnt that Volbeat is a Danish band??????????????)

Naked Lunch - Military of the Heart

I just really love the song in general, but never knew what it was called. Until a friend of mine made me a playlist with "music for Natis Danish mornings" and it was in there.

YUNGBLUD - god save me, but don't drown me out

I'm really in love with the line "I won't let my insecurities define who I am", as I have let them define me in my past. Here in Denmark I became more confident, so it's a mood to just scream those lyrics.

I Love You Honey Bunny - We Run

That one's the first one Kristyna has ever shared with me. We were sitting in the kitchen of our host family, talking about music. All of a sudden she whipped out this Czech band and this ridiculous song.

Ufo361, Sonus030 - Shit Changed

Many of my German speaking fellas will hate the fact that this song made it into the playlist, and I do too. But it just expressed my feelings in the beginning of my stay very precisely - that everything changed but that one person is still popping up on your display, hurting you.

AnnenMayKantereit - Tommi

It's a German song about how the singer's homesick and misses things. Me and my friends always sang it around the bonfire in summer. I remember sitting at the airport in Copenhagen on my first day and them sending me a cover of that song, sung by themselves.

aderbat - Pale Drone

Such a great song in general! But it always reminds me of Kristyna and how we watched the series Skins together.

Alli Neumann - Banditen

A song about heartbreak which is just great to sing to, what can I say more.

Buntspecht - Brennnesseln

I was in Austria for New Year's Eve and for some reason a guy I was celebrating with told me, that the singer of this band is his cousin. I started listening to them more and had a lot of dance breaks on my evening walks to his song. The pointe of it is "Everyone wants roses or tulips, freshly plucked, but the best are nettles nakedly nakedly on the chest" and I think it's beautiful.

badly - Run Awhile

It's a great, calming song reminding me to let stuff run a while before stressing over it or hyperfixating (is that a word?) myself on a 'problem'.

Flatsound - You Wrote 'Don't Forget' On Your Arm

Love that song so, so much. It's both musically and lyrically fantastic and it turned into one of my favorite songs, even though it is on the sadder side. And, I mean, screaming "I can't wait til I see your face and my brain thinks that it's looking at a stranger" is an absolute relief.

I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME - Debra

I randomly found out, that this band released a new album and this was the first song I heard off it while driving the bus home. It's a fun song, great to sing along and I can't wait to blast it in a car.

Mother Mother - I Got Love

Similar to the last song, I found this one on a bus ride home and it's just a feelgood song to me. I love to listen to it when I'm out of energy, as it boosts me in some weird kind of way.

DREAMERS, Big Boi, UPSAHL - Palm Reader

This song I, once again, share with Kristyna. And, as I kind of got into crystals lately, I really love the line: "Got your crystals in your pocket like a drug dealer".

Mumford & Sons - Little Lion Man

I love to hear this one on more quiet evening walks, it musically is just a pleasure to listen to. It makes me feel very warm for some reason, I don't know why either. Oh, and of course it makes me emotional, but in a good, cool way.

Mayberg - Anomalie

I'm soooo glad, that I found this one. It gives me the exact feeling of when you're at the club, the lights are very dark, there is fog all over the room and you're just there, dancing and screaming the lyrics. I miss that. Also, I was listening to it a lot while working in Genbrugskontakten's basement.

Peter Sommer - 8-6-6-0

That one's the first Danish song I ever recognized on the radio. I heard it at the Corona testcenter for the first time and then in a supermarket again. It's a sweet song about how you want your special someone to be near to you all the time. "Gid du kom til Skanderborg og blev her, gid du var så tæt at jeg ku' se dig" = "Wish you came to Skanderborg and stayed here, wish you were so close so I could see you".

Glee Cast - Somewhere Only We Know

Man, I love Glee. I watched it again here in Denmark and this is my favorite song of all of them. It always makes me emotional, I love it.

One Direction - Stockholm Syndrome

For some reason, I started enjoying listening to them (don't hit me). This was the first song where I was like, "Hm, I wonder if there are more good songs", and I am still in that awkward hole.

Lord Siva - Stjernene

I connect this song to my new host family, as it was the first one I heard while sitting with them. My host mother sang quietly to it and I spent the next few days trying to find out, what song it was, because I kind of liked it.

Boney M - Rasputin

This one has actually two meanings to me. 1.) My friends in Austria and me are always vibing to this one on parties, as it's a great song. We kind of have a little obsession with it. 2.) When I met up with volunteers to go to Legoland, we slept in Aarhus and after a little nap I had taken, I danced this song on Wii with Pablo. Yes, the video of it is great.

System Of A Down - Violent Pornography

I was OBSESSED with this song when I came here. It reminded me of some people I knew and the song itself just slaps.

Harry Styles - Sign Of The Times

Due to me crocheting his cardigan, I started to really like his music. This one's not my favorite, but I am on love with the line, "Just stop your crying, it's a sign of the times". I listen to that song when certain changes in my life make me sad. It just reminds me of the fact, that it's okay, but life goes on.

Der Nino aus Wien - Praterlied

I love this guy. This song is my friend's favorite, he always played it in summer. It tells he story of a musician, I guess Nino himself. I really like the kind of weird music he makes.

Daniel Johnston - Some Things Last A Long Time

A go-to song when I'm sad and want to embrace it for a second. If you listen closely, you can hear the singer's lisp.

Magtens Korridorer - Nordhavns Station

Someone special here in Denmark recommended this song once to me. It was actually the first time I got a recommended song here in Denmark, so it's double the special.

Sueco - novocane:)

Another great song for quiet and dark evening walks. I don't know why, but I really like this one.

Michelle Gruevich - Woman Is Still A Woman

It played in the Gender Equality webinar I attended and I immediately fell in love with it.

Bilderbuch - Nahuel Huapi

I was listening to it while sitting at the lake in Ollerup and watching the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen. Loved it.

Orishas - Distinto

We listened to this one driving home from Legoland. I mean, I was extremely tired, but I remember this song.

The Minds Of 99 - Hurtige Hænder

This is just a Danish song I really really like, which also makes me want to go clubbing again.

Vance Joy - Riptide

I guess it's my little host sister's favorite song. I hear it all the time when she is showering.

Post Malone, Swae Lee - Sunflower

My mentor Gry and I had a dance party to this one in our office. It was great, but luckily there was no one else in the house that day.

The Weeknd - Save Your Tears

I had that song stuck in my head while being in Aarhus with some volunteers. It just reminds me of the things I survived that weekend.

Måneskin - Coraline

They did not only win the Eurovision Song Contest, but also my heart. That's it, thank you.
